Grain Rot Review & Verdict
A post-launch take on the co-op extraction horror from Beck & Branch Games and Neem Interactive.
Score: 8.3 / 10 — A polished, genuinely funny co-op extraction horror with a body that won't stay dead and an Outpost that makes every run matter. Best enjoyed with three friends you don't mind betraying.
What it is
Grain Rot is a first-person co-op extraction horror about survival, scavenging, and spectacular betrayal, made by Beck & Branch Games (a two-person studio) and published by Neem Interactive. You and up to three friends are Living Sparks riding fragile wooden vessels into a scorched, rotting world. Smash furniture for loot, feed it to the Grinder, extract before the Corrupted close in, and rebuild the Sanctuary Outpost. When your vessel breaks, your Spark lives on — so death is just a costume change, not a game over.
Strengths
- Death has stakes without being punishing. The Spark possession system keeps you in the run and makes a broken teammate a problem to solve, not a spectator.
- The Outpost gives runs purpose. Loot rebuilds a persistent home with stat upgrades and rescued survivors — progression lives between runs, not just inside them.
- Physics-driven chaos is the selling point. Dropkick enemies, punt a friend's Spark out of their body with a cursed emote, barricade with a wardrobe. No two runs play the same.
- Surprisingly deep. Reviewers noted "more depth than your typical friendslop game" — the Rot escalates body corruption and mutation the deeper you go.
Weaknesses
- PC only. No console version or crossplay has been announced, which limits your squad's hardware.
- Depends on your group. Like any co-op title, a quiet or grumpy squad flattens the fun — and a troll can end the run.
- AI disclosure. The Steam page notes generative AI was used for the voice-over of a small number of in-game characters, which some players flagged.
- Modest scale. It's a small-studio debut; don't expect endlessly varied content — the loop is the point.
Who should buy

- ✅ Players who like extraction risk-reward and persistent progression.
- ❌ Solo players wanting a hand-held campaign.
- ❌ Console players waiting for a port.
