BEGINNER GUIDE
Grain Rot Beginner Guide
A co-op extraction horror where dying is just a costume change. Here's how the loop works and what to do on your first descent.
The core loop
You play a Living Spark — an artificial soul riding a fragile wooden vessel — descending a cursed elevator into shifting underground ruins with your crew. The goals are simple: scavenge furniture and loot, feed debris into the Grinder for gold, and reach the elevator to extract before the Corrupted close in. Progress comes from what you haul back: it rebuilds the Sanctuary Outpost, and what you rebuild decides what you can carry down next time. Lose it all and the Outpost feels it.
Death isn't the end
Your vessel can splinter, collapse, or catch fire — and when it breaks, the Spark escapes. You keep moving, keep lighting the way, and look for a nearby vessel to possess and rejoin the run. The risk is collective: if everyone's vessel breaks, the loot is gone for good. So a broken teammate isn't "out" — they're a glowing liability you need to cover until they find a new body.
Co-op & player count
Grain Rot supports online co-op for 1–4 players. A solo run is possible, but the game clearly leans into groups: one person scouts, someone hauls, another covers the rear. There's no crossplay yet — it's Windows PC (Steam) only. The deeper you go, the worse the Rot becomes: bodies warp, voices distort, and even emotes turn unsettling.
The Corrupted
The halls are full of Corrupted vessels — Sparks that were lost, or not lost completely. They react to sound, movement, and sometimes each other in ways that are hard to read until it's too late. You can fight or avoid them; you don't have to clear every room. Furniture doubles as cover, so a wardrobe left standing can save a run.
First descent checklist
- Grab a tool. A mallet (or similar) breaks furniture and crafts scrap — keep one handy before you go deep.
- Watch the Rot. The longer you stay, the worse it gets. Know when to bail.
- Find the fuse / exit. Extraction usually needs a fuse to trigger the elevator; some crews report a Compass working as a stand-in when your pack is full. Confirm the in-run mechanism each time.
- Cover broken teammates. A free Spark is vulnerable — shield them while they find a new vessel.
- Don't troll to death. You can knock a friend's Spark out of their vessel with a cursed emote. Funny once; wipe the crew and the loot is gone.
Beginner tips
- Treat the wooden body as a resource, not a health bar — when it breaks, swap and keep going.
- Smash furniture for materials; leave some standing as cover against the Corrupted.
- Extract early and often. A small safe haul beats a greedy run that ends in a wipe.
- Back at the Outpost, invest in permanent upgrades (max stamina, inventory space, durability) so the next descent is easier.
- Rescued survivors can be put to work producing between runs — a second income stream while you're away.
Before you start
Make sure your machine meets the bar — see the System Requirements page. Then grab up to three friends and take the elevator down.
